I Want To Go To There: The Carneros Inn

When I worked as a hotel designer, I began keeping a file of places I wanted to visit someday for ‘research’ purposes. I’ve always been a huge fan of barn-inspired architecture and to say that The Carneros Inn is at the top of my list would be an understatement. The property is made up of individual guest cottages and suites, a market and three restaurants that feature local and organic ingredients, and a spa that’s ranked one of the top in North America. Did I mention it’s located in the rolling hills of wine country, between Napa and Sonoma? Yes please.

With the winter we had in Boston this year, there were more than a few days that I considered selling a kidney to spend a week or six here…

Is this place ridiculous or what? I wonder how much more perfect it looks after a couple glasses of wine.

The whole place is a perfect example of the ‘farmhouse modern’ aesthetic- all the dark woods contrasting with crisp white woodwork and trim, the neutral palette accented with careful pops of color and a touch of industrial chic in the exposed ducts, beams and trusses.

Someday I’ll get here…I just know it.

Thanks so much to Erin for the opportunity to guest blog! I never would have guessed six months ago as I read my beloved Elements of Style over coffee every morning that I’d soon have the chance to work with the talented and hilarious woman behind it!

Have a great day everyone!

Thanks to all of you who are trying to post comments! I think the deal is that Erin has to approve them for them to appear, and let’s hope that’s not a priority as she enjoys her last day in Turks and Caicos!

  1. Oh my goodness, I can't believe I've actually been someplace you are writing about. We just happened upon this place when we went to Napa a few years back. It was heavenly. My husband & I often daydream about going back!!

  2. Gorgeous…Now I want to go!
Thanks for sharing about this place; it looks wonderful.

  3. ugh. completely and ridiculously fabulous. now i have something to fantasize about when i am wiping my kids’ butts today. i’m so printing out some of those photos and pasting them on my wish board.

  4. Mmmmm. Looks like the perfect spot for a “Girls Getaway Weekend”… If we all start saving now, we might be able to afford to celebrate turning 30 ;) there. Of course after a couple days in heaven I’d probably never want to come home.

  5. Kate, this hotel is gorgeous! The wine country is always on my top 5 list of places to go in the US, and when I finally do get to go, I’ll be staying at the Carneros Inn!

  6. I work in the meetings & incentives industry and I featured Carneros/Napa a few months ago on my blog… one place I'm dying to go. Trust me when I say that it is SIMPLY amazing. I haven't been yet, but the sales team that presented about the property seriously inundated us with photos and information. TO DIE FOR!! :)

  7. Having visited there a few years ago, I agree. It is nice; the design is clean and fresh. The photographs represent it well.

  8. you WILL get there… anything is possible… my friend and her husband just returned from staying there and they loved it. great blog… have a wonderful week…

  10. 2 years ago this August my husband and I honeymooned at the Los Carneros Inn – simply amazing. We blew our whole budget just to stay there a few days before we went to another more affordable place for the remainder of our trip. Totally worth it. The food at FARM is incredible and even though I was sick the whole trip, it didn’t even matter because it was so great there. Thanks for posting the pics, it definitely was a vacation I’ll have to wait about 20 more years to have again!

  11. Thanks Kate! The Carneros Inn looks amazing! Dave and I are heading to Sonoma in July and I am trying to talk Dave into staying there a night. I am thinking a great belated anniversary gift to ourselves…

  12. Wow! That’s amazingly beautiful. I’ve never heard of that hotel! But now I’m trying to figure out how to pay to go there on my unemployment! Hmm, I know I can swing it! Thanks, Kate!

  13. It is as perfect in real life as it is in the pictures. My husband and I spent some in Napa last summer and had breakfast at their restaurant, Boon Fly Cafe and it was by far the best meal we had on our visit.

  14. Thank you so much for this amazing post.. this place is fascinating and is now listed in my favorites for places to see when in California.. The modern barn/farmhouse design is outstanding.

I recently posted on Ina Garten’s Barn in East Hampton, which is really lovely. This is such a contrast because it doesn’t have any of the typical updated barn elements… it’s just modern, crisp and clean.

  16. This place looks so beautiful and stylish. I’ll have to check it out next time I’m in California!

  17. I can’t believe you featured this place, it’s literally 20 minutes from my house ! It’s absolutely lovely, but there are hundreds of other places you can visit as well if you come to the Wine Country.

I have a second blog that writes all about these places right in the heart of Wine Country.

    Visit me there at http://www.WineCountryChic.com

Hope you can visit soon !

  18. Last year I went to a work event in Sonoma, and we ended up spending half of our time in Napa. When we were traveling back and forth, we passed by the Carneros Inn, and it looked amazing.

  19. My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon… gloat gloat gloat. :) Lounging by the pool overlooking the vineyards. Evening by the fireplace, wine in hand. The cottages – too perfect for words. I HIGHLY suggest you indulge yourself… vino in hand. Absolutely worth it.

  20. That amazing place is 20 minutes from my house ! On a late summer day, sipping chardonnay, it is heaven. Hope you can visit soon.

  21. The Carneros Inn is fabulous! I am so glad you included it. Your post takes me back to a wonderful visit there. The decor is amazing, fresh, refreshing, and luxurious . . . especially the bathrooms. My 8-month-old was conceived there! Can’t wait to go back!
