Golden Globes Best and Worst

So, I’m in paradise…without a tv.  So I was not able to watch the Golden Globes, but that doesn’t mean I can’t review the fashion! :) A little best and worst dressed (and a lot in between) to kick off your morning:

For the first time in forever, I don’t think I was bowled over with a clear “best dressed” favorite! There were a bunch I “liked”, but nothing that totally rocked my world. Sienna Miller looks fabulous and unique- especially love the hair and makeup. And Naomi Watts looked amazing in this canary sheath with snake necklace. Although I feel like perhaps I’ve seen a version of this on her before? Hey if it works, don’t mess with it…

Any Adams’ dress looks like it was made specifically for her body (and maybe it was)- flawless fit and I love the cut, but perhaps it would have REALLY been amazing in a bolder color- emerald? I’d like a bigger earring with this as well since the rest is so simple. And Julia Louis Dreyfus always nails it- this white one shouldered gown with the straight hair and drop earrings is sensational on her.

Viola Davis is typically a red carpet star, and this red dress looks great on her- also looking great in red was Allison Janney

I wish Julianne Moore’s hair was up or styled differently because this dress is KILLER. And shockingly, I looooove Kelly Osbourne’s navy jeweled number!

Robin Wright looks so edgy cool (which she exudes naturally).  Love the separates, but wish there was a funky necklace or a big cuff for accent (I know she wouldn’t do big earrings and they would look all wrong on her). Emma Stone also went edgy in a jumpsuit- which is SOOOOOO close, but that bow/train situation keeps it from completely working for me. Her hair and makeup is SPOT ON (and makes me more convinced I need to shop my hair).

How adorable are Eddie Redmayne and his wife? I LOVE his tux jacket. LOVE LOVE LOVE.  And Anna Faris and Chris Pratt look so lovely!!! I think she got a new stylist and stopped getting lip injections and now looks natural and really pretty!

Okay, so am I the ONLY one who hates Amal’s gloves??? The dress, earrings and hair are all so pretty and the white satin gloves just kill it for me.  George, of course, looks dashing.  Jen and Justin looked good too- she looked sleek and chic is black with her hair up.

George Clooney, Amal Clooney Justin Theroux, Jennifer Aniston

I skimmed this pic and then went back because I ADORE Calista’s dress. Amazing! And since she made me think of Ally McBeal which made me think of lawyer shows which lead me to my current The Good Wife obsession (so late to the game on this one) I had to add in Christine Baranski who always looks so chic (and her clothes on the show? Insane.)

Harrison Ford, Calista Flockhart Christine Baranski

So Jessica Chastain- almost??? I couldn’t help but see the connection between her dress and one of the WORST of the night, Lana Del Ray (who looks like Priscilla Presley channeling a mermaid in the 70’s).  I’ve just never been a fan of these pleated gowns. Jessica does look stunning, and in person I’d probably gush.  Jury is still out.  Did it look good on TV?

From the Trying Too Hard Files, may I present Kate Hudson and J. Lo. Particularly J. Lo who I feel like all of the sudden has been hell bent to prove she’s not getting older. Except…time.

Emily Blunt shows us how to do white with cut out while Rosamund Pike shows us absolutely how to NOT. Holy unflattering dress!! It’s too droopy and loose and weird!! So sad, because she’s such a  stunner.

Reese looked pretty but I was a tiny bit bored (nothing can beat her red carpet appearance at the 2007 Oscars with surprise BANGS and that purple Nina Ricci. SIGH. Kate Beckinsale is one the prettiest women in Hollywood and I love this dress, but the hair is a tad prom for me.

Allison Williams looks terrifying in this picture.  Her hair and makeup are too severe, but girl knows how to rock a ball gown!  Whoever put that awkward leather belt on Kate Mara and gave her that Carol Brady haircut needs to be put in time out.

If you are looking for inspiration for pale, frumpy gowns look no further than Amanda Peet (who NEEDS a new stylist so badly, always one of the worst dressed) and Kristin Wiig. Just horrible.

I can’t believe Lupita is one of my bad picks, but I do not love this floral applique dress. Sad face.  And Ruth Wilson’s dress is just strange- the cut is stiff, the pattern odd.  I dig the color, but NO. Side note, is her show good?? Apparently so since it and she won last night!

Lupita Nyong'o 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

OH CHRIST. I am so sad about this Tiny Fey situation.  She may be funny, but that dress is not. Also Amy Poehler’s frumpy blue number is baffling!  Amy’s dress on stage was WAY WAY better but Tina’s not so much.

Tina Fey, Amy Poehler

Kerry washington, what is the fresh hell is this dress? YIKES! Same goes for you Claire Danes! I never understand the thought process behind gowns like this.

OK, the WORST. Zosia Mamet and Alan Cumming. Especially Alan (whom I love)- that flesh suit is just creeeeeeeeepy!

Zosia Mamet Alan Cumming

Did I miss anyone? Your thoughts?

AMMENDMENT: Just saw Gwyneth Paltrow dress. WINNER. Total fave. Love the bright pink.

And yes, Kiera Knightley looked absolutely tragic. Because you are pregnant does not mean you need to dress like Little House on the (Chanel) Prairie.

  1. Rosamund Pike’s stylist, if she is using one, should be fired! The dress looks like it’s sliding down her frame. The straps need to taken up. Shame, as RP has a lovely figure and good taste but this dress does not work.

  2. I didn’t get to see the beginning of the awards so thanks for catching me up!
You MUST watch The Affair!!!!! It’s such a great sho w and the way it’s done is very creative. I can’t wait to see what season 2 brings – you won’t be disappointed.
    Enjoy your vacation.

  3. Catherine Heigl looked amazing. I think Gwyneth looked orange…bad spray tan. Did not love Jennifer Aniston’s hair. Was it me or did Kate Hudson’s face look strange? Maybe her hair was pulled too tight. Something was off. I read a quote from Rosamund Pike that Vera Wang personally designed that dress for her. She said Vera promised that she would know how to dress her body so soon after having a baby. Yikes! Loooved Emily Blunt. Loved her dress, loved her earrings, loved her hair, loved it all.

  4. Amal’s gloves… so sooo awful. And her posture! My god girl, stand up straight! It kind of kills me when I want to love her so much. I agree with the rest of your assessment 100% but Jessica Chastain… she is on my worst dressed list FOR SURE. Her boobs were weirdly pushed together (and pushed up in the most unnatural way), and the fabric on the dress was sooo shiny. The color, the fabric, the pleats… all bad – on the red carpet it looked like pleather. The only saving grace was her hair and makeup – that looked amazing.

  5. You’re NOT the only one who hated Amal’s gloves — I did too! but I think I’M the only one who hated Jen Aniston’s look. It felt dated and didn’t fit very nicely :( overall though I thought the red carpet bodes well for the rest of awards season!

    x Lily

  6. Amal’s gloves are kid leather, not satin, which would have made them horrible. I think kid gloves are way beyond elegant and are making a comeback. Look no further than this past year’s Met Ball theme–Charles James–and the ballgowns paired with gloves it inspired (SJP, Karlie Kloss). I think this might become a thing, and I’m honestly looking forward to it. What feels more decadent and ladylike than tucking yourself into an evening gown and pulling on some perfectly fitted, opera length kid gloves? All I can say is don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.

  7. Amal’s gloves are awful and ruined her outfit it was rather bland to start with.
Keira Knightly ‘s dress is frumpy and looks like drapes from a Victorian house.
Amy Adam ‘s dress is beautiful compliments her hair color and skintone.

  8. This is always one of my favorite posts of the year! I never even watch the award show (or pre-shows) (… scandalous, I know) but I’m always excited to get your fashion reviews the day after :) I love your witty quips and spot-on fashion sense!

  9. Gwenyth Paltrow was stunning!
Many praises for Jennifer Aniston; however to me the whole look aged her many years!

  10. Noticed a lack of accessories on most. A necklace or a large bracelet would have enhanced many of the very plain gowns .Amal’s gloves really distracted from the overall look. They were out of place for the event. This was not a formal ball !
Overall the gowns were a miss. I do have to mention that Helen Mirren looked great . She always dresses so elegantly .

  11. Loved Amal’s dress, but when I fist saw her on television I thought she had casts on both her arms. She is such a beauty. She’s like a darker version of CBK.

  12. Best = Paltrow and Miller. They appeared chic and effortless. Both made me excited about Spring. Wallis also looked very age appropriate.

So many others tried too hard but I think I was most disappointed by Fey. She had the world at her feet in terms of designs and her best look by far was the tux.

  13. I completely agree with loving Amy Adams’s dress but I think the emerald you suggest would have killed it. Very surprised that I liked Kelly Osborne’s dress. It feels similar to Amy Poehler’s onstage dress, which I adore!
    Sienna Miller=boring.
I loved Jennifer Aniston although a lot of sites have called it boring. I’m with you on Amal’s gloves; not a fan. Calista and Harrison were perfect (get me on first name terms!)
The best Reese dress ever was the yellow shortly after breaking up with Ryan Phillipe, although she did look good last night.

  14. I think Amal is EVERYTHING but those gloves. No, you weren’t the only one who didn’t like them. And I thought Jessica Chastain looked great ” live” (on my TV).

  15. Nailed it with this post. I only saw a few of the red carpet photos on Sunday and was like, “What’s with the frumpy frump frump?” So many who are on my faves list just like whoa didn’t do themselves justice.

  16. as soon as I saw dresses I was like, Erin will hate this one…and love this one… Poor Keira! But I thought Kristin Wiig looked better than she had in a while, at least the color looks good on her, thats an improvement. Also Amanda Peet, always the worst, she has great taste in interiors I can’t understand her. Listen, have the very best time in Jamaica! I am loving your insta pics! xoxox
