The Oscars 2015 Red Carpet!

There were a lot of good looks last night, but as it has been with the last few red carpet events, nothing that really made me drop everything and freak out.  A couple close calls, but nothing like Cate Blanchett in 2005, Nicole Kidman in 1997, Mila Kunis in 2011, Kate Hudson in 2003, Charlize Theron in 2000 , Michelle Williams in 2006 or Jennifer Lopez in 2003.

I prefer many of the dresses I picked over what the stars actually wore (not to toot my own horn or anything, I just do.)  But lets review!

I have to admit, the only dress that made me go “OMG, I love that dress!” belonged to a non-celebrity whose name I didn’t even know- Robert Duvall’s wife, Luciana Pedraza!!! During his interview I could not keep my eyes off her coral, sparkly, deep V gown. And then J.Lo showed up and I was all “wait, are they wearing the SAME DRESS?” Upon examination, they are not the exact same dress but they are damn close.  J.Lo’s boobs are a BIT much, but I prefer the sequin placement on hers, but love the slightly more coral shade of Pedraza’s gown.  Do you think J. Lo threw a fit? Methinks so. :)

My second favorite, and this goes to a COUPLE, is Eddie Redmayne and his wife Hannah Bagshawe.  I’m telling you, the non-famous spouses were the best dressed!  Her McQueen dress was different, interesting, gorgeous and funky and his navy tux is PERFECT. I am not completely obsessed with navy tuxedos on men. I want to get Andrew one so he can just wear it around the house for me.  Together these two just nailed it.

I think Lupita was lovely in her Calvin Klein- it was the perfect mix of inventive, unique but still PRETTY.  The 6,000 pearls just illuminated her, admittedly already luminous, skin.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Cate Blanchett is just not human. It’s just not fair to compare us mortals to her otherworldly beauty.  Even in this incredibly simple dress she looks perfect.  The statement necklace is incredible, and the whole things says “I am amazing, I am Cate F*cking Blanchett, but tonight is not my night.” I bow down.

Kevin Hart’s fiancee Enniko Parrish’s dress was GORGEOUS on camera- the back was really beautiful.  I would have done a big, blingy earring, but she looked sleek and lovely.

Jenna Dewan looked amazing. She’s been killing it on the red carpets lately (and in life, seeing as she sleeps next to Channing Tatum every night).  Also slaying me was Zoe Saldana who literally had TWINS five minutes ago. I mean, HOW? Just HOW? I think this super feminine look was really pretty on her.

Jamie Chung’s dress was really awesome. I loved the color and pattern of the sequins! 87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

I for one loved Naomi Watts’ dress and am not sure why I’ve seen it on some Worst Dressed lists?! The back was rad and she is another red carpet star that rarely, if ever, misses.  On the other hand, I find that Rosamund Pike misses quite a lot, and last night she got it so, so right with the red column gown and updo. Wonderful on her!

MERYL. So perfect! This Lanvin situation is just as cool and awesome as she is. Great choice.

Anna Kendrick was the first celebrity I saw and I think she looked so pretty!  I know some people are saying it looks a little prom-y, but I think it’s quite stunning!

Natalie Portman didn’t do the red carpet, but at the Vanity Fair bash she looked ethereal and completely elegant. Especially the earrings and makeup. LOVE.

Laura Dern- I adored her dress, it was perfect for her, but the necklace needs to go.  And maybe a little less heavy on the bang sweep.  She looked great though!

Some couples I thought looked awesome:

Andy Samberg and his lady- ADORBS.

Benedict Cumberbatch and his new (and pregnant) wife. And Faith and Tim- Faith’s dress doesn’t looks awesome here, but on TV and up close it was really gorgeous- and that long diamond pendant necklace was the PERFECT accessory!

Common’s velvet tux? KILLER.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Reese looked perfectly gorgeous, but something about this look was a little stiff for me. I was so hoping she’d wear a bold jewel tone a la her amazing dress (and bangs) in 2007.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Also looking so gorgeous, because she is ridiculously good looking, was Sienna Miller in Oscar de la Renta.  I am 90% on this dress, Love the silhouette, the lace train, the navy/ black color, but something about the little bow at the neck irked me. I still like it, I just… I don’t know. Maybe I’m wrong.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

The silhouette was on point (minus the too tight fit that caused pulling in the front). But I just can;t get behind the flower on the shoulder.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

I only saw the front of Marion Cotillard’s dress at first and LOVED it, then she turned around. Ehhhhhh.  I mean, she can pull it off because she’s French and Marion- Freaking- Cotillard, but still. Not my fave.

I expect more from Julianne Moore, and while having a dress made custom for you by Karl Lagerfeld is pretty sweet, if it’s not a SHOWSTOPPER it doesn’t matter.  I wanted to see her in either a deep, rich color like green, navy or purple or in black and white, which she rocks pretty hard ( a la in Tom Ford).  This washed her out and was a little too loose in the waist.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

I look at this dress on Jennifer Aniston and my reaction is simply “Eh.”  I feel like I’ve seen this before, it’s totally expected for her and nothing special. I wish she’d take more of a risk sometimes.  However, seeing as she was not nominated perhaps she didn’t want a ton of attention. If she had done something different with her hair perhaps it would have looked more interesting.

I liked the concept of this dress, and the cool jeweled strap, but this was a little flat on Dakota Johnson.  There was too much bare chest and her hair was too simple and flat too.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

I was not crazy about this color on Emma Stone nor the hair. I LOVED LOVED LOVED the dress I had picked for her and think it would have been a million times better.  She still looks pretty though, it’s not awful, it’s just EHHHHH.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

In concept I liked Margot Robbie’s look, but in execution it didn’t work for me.  The draping at the waist was unflattering and the sheer sleeves felt dated. I loved the hair, makeup and necklace, but the dress was not my favorite.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

I knew that Kiera Knightly was going to be on the worst dressed list because for some reason she’s kind of gone off the fashion rails since getting pregnant.  This dress is unflattering, odd and does not do her justice at all.

I really did not like the cut of this gown on Jessica Chastain- it looks almost like she’s wearing a sequined sports bra? The double straps make her shoulders look super wide and the necklace is out of place.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

I know some people (i.e. my husband, of course) thought she looked hot, but I felt like Scarlett looked like she wandered off a super hero movie set.  The dress would have been amazing without that neck thing though.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

EEEEEEKKKKK.  The matching pocket square to the 1988 style purple satin gown. Oooof.  Love him though, so talented.

This was a “what was he THINKING” moment for David Oyelowo. A red tux is never a good idea. Ever.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

The lines of this dress is lovely, but the colors are so strange. The orange, yellow and pink is not my favorite on her.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

This one might be the worst- Felicity Jones’ dress was a 1994, Jessica McClintock nightmare. Horrible all around, but specifically those hip pleats.  WHHHHHYYYYYYY?

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Kerry Washington’s Miu Miu looked much more mother of the bride than Oscar red carpet.   Makeup, hair and jewels were fabulous though.

87th Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

It’s Gaga, I know, but this dress is just a hot mess- and she looks like she’s ready to go backstage and do the dishes.

Oh man. Viola Davis usually looks awesome, but this was terrible! I don’t understand it!? It’s so 80’s, and then with that necklace on top of it- it just makes me sad.

And then we need to discuss the mess that Marion Cotillard changed into for the Vanity Fair party. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTT????

Who were your favorites??? Where was Jennifer Lawrence??

  1. I honestly think Meryl was best dressed. Everyone else (besides Cate, duh) just half-assed it. Couple of points though:
If you have boobs as good as JLo’s , it’s prob ok to let them do their thang.
Can’t even recognize Tim McGraw w/out facial hair + hat
Gwyneth reminding us it’s not about the dress, it’s about her 20 year-old stripper’s ass/bod.
Everyone’s killer statement earrings! Did you see Jennifer Hudson’s emeralds? O.Mah.Gaaaa.

  2. I couldn’t wait to log on this morning and get your verdicts on last night’s dresses! Agree with you on nearly all points – my favorites were Kate B. (No, she’s not of this world!), Anna Kendric, Luciana P., and Rosamund P., with the latter being my favorite! I am quite honestly sick of Jennifer Lopez bearing her breasts at nearly every red carpet event. Enough, already. Leave something to the imagination and show some class. And speaking of class, Natalie Portman is a style icon in my book and embodies natural beauty, sophistication and elegance. Love her. Lastly – I did like Julianne Moore’s dress. I do agree the waist could have been more fitted, but she looked so, so polished and I felt the look was complete. I thought she was radiant – and age appropriate. Great pics, Erin! Thanks!

  3. Your dress picks were way better, gotta say (especially for Stone, who looked a little like a celery stick in my humble opinion).

Stand-outs for me were Margot, Sienna, Rosamund and Jamie Chung (seriously that girl can do no wrong, ever).

On a side note, why was Cotillard wearing bubble wrap…?

  4. I feel like some of these were way better “in action” at the awards show. (Sorry East Coasters!) Once you saw Margot present, that Dynasty nightgown was amazing. And I hated Nicole Kidman’s dress, until I saw it during the show. The colors were much less awkward. Speaking of awkward colors, I HATED JLo’s “perfectly matched to my orangey skin” dress color.

And that deep red/wine tux? Not many men could pull that off but I think he looks fab!

Was looking forward to this post once I saw Emma’s acid green! Thanks!

  5. The dress Marion Cotillard changed into for the Vanity Fair party… did she accidently tuck her napkin into the front of it? Felicity Jones’ dress, at least she didn’t look fourteen years old … it fit her better than the last awards show. Jennifer Aniston pretty much ALWAYS wears her hair down and with very little change in style … risk taker she’s not. But honestly, there weren’t any total trainwrecks last night. I saw a lot of pretty gowns on pretty women.
What blew me away was Lady Gaga’s triblute to Julie Andrews. I know the girl has great pipes, I’ve heard her singing with Tony Bennett. But … just WOW!

PS. just looked at your picks again. Yep, you suggested much better looks in most cases.

  6. Jessica Chastain’s dress reminded me of the dress Julia Roberts wore in My Best Friend’s Wedding. I loved everything about Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchette (duh). You were completely on point about Jennifer Aniston. I thought Lady GaGa redeemed herself a bit with the gown and hair for her performance – still a little off but so much better than usual. And with that voice, who cares what she was wearing?

  7. I guess I don’t know enough about Eddie Redmayne, but I really thought that was his sister!

There are some really cute lobs going on, like Nicole Kidman. When are we going to see yours, Erin? ;)

  8. “Gaga ready to go backstage and do the dishes” — dying over here!
Your suggestions last week were SO MUCH BETTER than what showed up last night. This is one of my favorite posts you do all year! So good!

  9. Agreed with everything EXCEPT: I think Julianne Moore looked radiant and the details on that dress were unbelievable in interviews. Homegirl is 54, I think she looked age appropriate, classy, old-Hollywood understated glam. The deep jewel colors are almost predictable for her at this point.

J.LO on the other hand, I am just so bored with the washed out colors, boobs out look. I agree she has a fantastic bod, but just think she could do so much more. I’d put her in the MEH category.

And Cate – my personal all time fave – did leave me wanting more. But I respect her choices – always!

  10. I am gonna have to say that the nights best accessory goes to Faith Hill, and it is not her necklace. Tim McGraw is swoon worthy lately…OMG.

  11. I loved Luciana’s gown too. But my friends 8 year old daughter opined that she was a tad too old for it!…LOL!
Julianne’s gown would have worked if they removed the black detail at the hips.

  12. Erin I love getting these Oscar updates and some of the favorite photos I have seen are of the good looking couples together! Love Lupita’s dress and yes finally a fabulous de la Renta on Sienna Miller: there were just so many so , so looks.

    The Arts by Karena

  13. Your picks for the stars to wear were much more exciting and would have made for a more interesting red carpet! These looks were okay but like you said, nothing major. Your picks for worst are certainly on point, yikes! Jessica Chastain especially. She has the most beautiful coloring and could look so amazing, and someone chose that dress for her? Ick.

  14. I think this is one of my favorite posts you do all year! Look forward to it! I think you nailed it with your dress picks, especially Emma Stone. I adore her, and her dress was gorgeous, but it would have been worlds better in a different color. There were a lot of flops this year, nothing spectacular.

But this: “I am amazing, I am Cate F*cking Blanchett, but tonight is not my night.” I bow down.

    Right. On.

  15. I think you need to add Oprah to the BAD list – she looked like a stuffed sausage in that dress! Having your cleavage at your collar bone is not a good look…

  16. I was really hoping you’d mention Khloe Kardashian on Enews last night after seeing some of your tweets. She was awful and had no business commenting on all these people who are being honored for their talent? Not to mention, she looked terrible, and I usually like her best of all the Kardashians! Shame on Enews for including her in their commentary. She wouldn’t know class if it came up and smacked her in the face. When she dissed Lupita Nyong’o, Anna Kendrick, Marion Cotillard, and Zoe Saldana? I wanted to throw up.

I woke up excited to read your commentary on this. :(

    1. Oh my gosh, yes! Shame on E! for inviting Khloe to their panel. When she wasn’t puckering her lips or playing with her hair she was dissing these talented ladies. I for one hope she will never return to do this again!!

      1. Sorry I forgot to mention this- I agree, of course. I think that having a Kardashian on critiquing the fashion of these talented women is totally ridiculous. THe whole family is gross and ridiculous in my opinion, and I’m not sure how or why American culture has elevated them to the level of fame they have. It’s gross. I’m so sick of seeing them everywhere. ESPECIALLY as fashion critics for a big cable network! AND, I’m equally pissed the Academy didn’t honor Joan Rivers in memorium- she was a fixture at the Oscars, like her or hate her, and that was a big mistake for them.

  17. Agree with all your picks. J -Lo needs to accept the fact that she’s aging and embrace it. She’s beautiful, but that dress was tacky, especially when the incomparably elegant Julie Andrews ( The Sound of Music–yay!!!) was on stage and the camera panned to J-Lo’s side boob. Ugh.
I did think Julianne Moore looked gorgeous. She is the epitome of class.

  18. As usual, I agree with you! Eddie and Hannah were my favorites for the night. She killed it. Cate is my perennial fave. Loved Portman’s earrings. I secretly liked GP’s weird flower and thought she was channeling a weird LA-Dynasty thing. YOUR PICKS would have been so much better on most of these stars. Truly, some of these people need your help. Oh, poor Kiera. Pregnancy is uncomfortable, especially sitting down all night, but this dress is just not right on so many levels. Your pick really would have been soooooo much better.

  19. J. Lo and her boobs. If this was ten years ago, maybe. She has kids. I know, so do many of the others, Gwynnie included, but do they have to be on show all the time. Give the girls a rest.

    Natalie Portman. Amazing.

  20. Agree that so many of your picks would’ve been SO much better! There was such a strong 80’s prom vibe–I was disappointed overall.

My favorites were Cate B., Hannah (Eddie’s wife), and Natalie P at VF Party.

  21. I think Keira Knightly would have looked so much better in Marion Cotillard’s dress. Though I loved it on Marion Cotillard too. I know its not everyone’s cup of tea, but I love it!

  22. I liked Felicity Jones’ look! The color was good on her and I thought the full skirt was both cute and glamorous.

  23. As with Interior Design or Fashion Design, everything is subjective. It’s so interesting to see the different perspectives on these dresses. I watched two different “fashion show experts” commentary shows and your take on most of the dresses were completely different that theirs. It also highlights the role of a stylist which I’m assuming most of these women have. (Except Kate Blanchette) One slip up from your stylist and you could be ridiculed for years in flash back videos. That is a ton of pressure if you think about it.

  24. Can you please also review the Vanity Fair Oscar Party Red Carpet. There were so many costume changes by the big stars and I’d love to hear your thoughts!!

  25. Great picks! I also loved Diane kruger’s after party look. So chic on her. All-in-all underwhelming red carpet though. Where were Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina and Brad, Ben affleck and Jennifer Gardner? Amy Adams?

  26. TOTALLY agree with you on Joan Rivers and Khloe Kardashian. Super ridiculous all around. Something should have been done for Joan. And per usual, I am totally with you with most of your picks, but I can’t get behind Zoe Saldana’s dress, I think chest and down it was pretty, but it was SO tight on top with those spaghetti straps, I just wanted to rip them off and make it strapless. I also don’t know if you saw her after party dress for the Vanity Fair party, but she looked STUNNING, and I think it was a big mistake not to wear that dress all night. I also didn’t care for Sienna Miller, I just thought that was so boring, she has such a cute figure and although that dress had lots of textures, you couldn’t see any of it and it looked bo-ring to me.

  27. …your comment on scarlett j: my husband thought she looked GREAT! i agree w/you completely on this one! loved kate b the best!

  28. I loved Cate as usual, Jenna Dewan, and although I am NOT a fan of JLo as a person I really thought she looked like a movie star (as Joan Rivers used to say). I think the dress Julianne Moore wore had so much potential, but, didn’t like the neckline or waist. Reese played it very safe. Scarlett always looks so pissy! I loved Sienna Miller’s look – hair, makeup, dress was so classy and beautiful.

Also, can’t we all just hope to be Julie Andrews?

  29. Meryl was the best dressed of the evening. Lady Gaga sang so beautifully who cared what she looked like. Wow! I was shocked. For the record, Gaga can be gorgeous when she wants to be.

  30. Your comments are on point. My go to after the Oscars. And they should be going to you for their dress picks – your picks for them are always better. Thanks!

  31. I didn’t notice her on TV at the awards, only on your post. The wife/girlfriend/date of Andy Samberg- Oh Lord she looks so amazingly adorable and perfect and precious. Love her whole look.
