Fashion Friday: Neutral Layers for (Not Quite) Spring!

Getting dressed during the time between winter and spring can really suck. One day it can be sunny and you don’t even need a jacket and the next you walk out your door and slip and fall on your ass on a patch of ice before you realize how cold it is.  They key for dressing in early spring is layers.  And right now I’m loving the look of pale, neutral tones in various shades- it keeps you toasty while the light colors signify spring!

I was totally inspired by this shot. The bare legs you need to save for when it’s a BIT warmer, but the silhouette and overall concept are fabulous.  The key to this look is to always pair a slim, fitted pencil skirt with something looser and ideally, boxy and slightly cropped (but no tummy showing, please).  It shows of your curves without having everything be tight. The mix of textures is key too- smooth wool, chunky knit and suede (which is gonna be so huge for spring and next fall so stock up!)

Here’s a variation on this look that I’m crazy about. If it’s still chilly, layer a beige faux fur vest over the sweater for extra warmth! I NEED this outfit.

Another great look was one I saw on Blair of Atlantic/ Pacific.  Another take on the layered neutral tones while still being warm.

And here’s my take on it- a linen coat topping a mesh woven sweater (with a white cami underneath) white jeans and suede boots and a snake printed scarf keeps it interesting but crisp too!

  1. Until bare legs are acceptable (in New England, we can dream about this day…), are nude stockings the best choice for the first outfit?

  2. Yes, the in between seasons thing can suck! I just took my dog out for a walk in a parka, wellies and gasp! (track pants). Not even close to the beautiful outfits you’ve profiled today but on a cold Friday morning in Canada it just had to be done!

  3. Monochrome neutrals always look so chic and classy… monochrome whites are even better. There’s something simple and luxurious about it! I might give ’em a shot for lunch out in Brookline tomorrow…

  4. My daughter has her first round of job interviews in the next few weeks. What do young professionals wear these days? I don’t think its a navy suit, pink stripped blouse and a floral head band!

  5. Love these neutrals. How about a Spring/Summer handbag post? I’m on the hunt and not sure what direction to take!

  6. You’ve got to give credit to the always chic Anh of 9 to 5 Chic ( in the first photo. The woman kills it on a daily basis.
