Fashion Friday: Go Fish

There are few things more classic than a cream Fisherman knit cable sweater for fall. And I’ve been seeing them a lot in stores and spreads for fall. So now is the time to pick one up (especially with all the sales this weekend). One of these natty numbers looks awesome both with denim and paired with dressier items like skirts or leather pants (for that dressy/ not dressy look).

Here’s a grouping of some great options in various styles and price points (and if you’re down with vintage, Etsy has a bunch of great ones too!)  Some are made to be oversize, others not- but if you like that look just buy a size up (or two!)

And SQUUUUEAAAAALLLLL, look at these teeny tiny baby cable sweaters (I bought the Gap one for Baby Gates but may need to also get this Mini Boden one too!)

    1. Look for the thinnest weave possible and stick to a more fitted shape over boxy and large. The Tory open cardigan version would be great too with a more fitted cami or tee underneath

  1. You must be some sort of mind-reader (or maybe it’s a pregnancy side-effect?). I’ve been looking high and low for a great fisherman sweater for the Fall but have come up empty-handed.
I actually ordered the LLBean one above, but it’s too short for me (I’m about 6’0″ tall) in the torso. Thanks for the roundup – here’s hoping one of the other options works!
Have a great Labor Day weekend!

    1. ….just a little tip on the Barbour sweater (number 7 above). It’s available for less than what Nordstrom is asking on the Sands Point Shop site (

  2. You really showed us a price range from $26 to $400+. Something for everyone. I appreciate the non wool sweaters as even lambswool and merino makes me itch. And is also way too hot for central heating. Now if we were walking on the moors in the fall …

  3. Erin, If you love fisherman style sweaters, you should check out Tempest Bentley. The MOST beautiful & organic fisherman- style sweaters, even Miss Gwyneth the queen of Goop was recently photographed in one. Pricey, but worth it!

  4. The little mini cable for your little guy is the cutest ever! You are going to have sooooo much fun dressing your little guy. To this day little baby boy clothes are my favorites, and the shoes!!! don’t even get me started on the shoes. I had 3 boys so I got to play a LOT!!!!!

  5. I’m mixing my comment from Thursday and Friday…over the head sweaters for baby are a big pain. If you want to get a sweater like that, buy it in 2T or above, when it is (only slightly)easier to get it on and off the little ones. Cardigan sweaters with snaps or zippers or Velcro are the way to go. Get a WIDGEON FLEECE HOODIE. My favorite piece of clothing for my 2 NY winter babies/toddlers (now 3 and 6 yrs old). Sadly, a lot of the adorable and expensive baby clothes will get worn once because they aren’t practical (jeans in size 3 months???? The worst…change one diaper in those and you will see). But if you get one photo in them, it’s worth it!

  6. Grandpa style cardigans (that’s what I call them!) in chunky knits are awesome for babies. Trying to pull things over little baby heads can sometimes be a challenge and cardigans are an awesome way to go. My husband rolled his eyes (he’s not a cardigan type of guy) but they really are easier.

  7. love! i have two vintage children’s irish fisherman’s sweaters that my great-grandma got my brother and I as preschoolers on her one and only trip back to Ireland after leaving for the States when she was in her teens…which my daughter refuses to wear because ‘IT FEELS LIKE THORNS!!!!!’ my daughter is a little dramatic. parenting…you can’t control everything!
