I didn’t get to actually watch most of the red carpet because Henry decided it was an apt time to freak out, but I do have some opinions this morning after seeing everything online-
First of all, Charlize wins it all. Hands down. The gown, the necklace, everything.
As always I’m pretty excited to watch the Oscar’s red carpet this weekend and I spent some time this morning scouting the recent fashion week shows for dresses I think may be great on the red carpet. Honestly, it was hard- I’m not loving a lot of the looks out there right now. And if I see one more celebrity in a see through skirt I will stab myself in the eye. I’m hoping for some more ladylike and straight up glamorous styles. What about you?
I don’t love the metallic belt or the headdress, but I do love the color and feminine silhouette of this Zuhair Murad number. This black Donna Karan dress is insanely sexy in a structured way. With an updo and huge emerald and diamond statement earrings- kaboom.
It’s been a rough week of sleep with Henry and therefore I am a walking, talking, blogging zombie. So coffee has become lifeblood. And since my brain is resembling more of a bowl of scrambled eggs than anything right now, I’m just going to share these darling coffee cups with adorable lids (to keep things warmer longer or just be cute, I’m not sure) by famed ceramicist Richard Ginori. Adorable to gift someone with a bag of their favorite beans or tin of tea. His stuff is hard to find but I found some at FX Dougherty and Gumps,
He also has to die for china place-settings for those of you who might be looking for wedding china!
Since we bought our house three years ago I have wanted to redo the surround on our fireplace badly. I tempered the heinousness of our current brick and terracotta tile situation with several coats of black masonry paint, but the time has come to really do it right. And by right, I of course mean marble. Because marble is always just so right. I don’t mind our actual mantle and I’m also not made of money, so I’m not going to do what I’d REALLY like to do which is to replace the whole thing with an antique salvaged mantle. Instead I’m looking at remnants of Statuario, Calacatta and Danby marbles (my faves) to cover the brick and replace the hearth. We also plan to convert to gas because our flue is old and small and our wood fires leave the house smokey and smelly. Oh, and we need to get rid of the shiny brass doors too.

So here are some inspirations of both antique mantles and new marble surrounds to inspire you and I!
For the past few decades stainless steel has been the reigning champ of the appliance world. If you’ve ever watched any HGTV episode you know that “stainless steel and granite” signifies a high end kitchen to the average home buyer. But I remember growing up in the 80’s and early 90’s in a house with white appliances against whitewashed oak cabinets and it being the “of the moment” style; and now it seems people are trying to make a comeback of not only white appliances but black as well. Of course they have new fancy names like “White Ice”, and are in more of a smooth matte finish, but they are still the colors of old. So what do we think of this “new” trend?
This is GE’s new “Slate” range- a more matte dark grey finish. This I can see working in combination with dark grey cabinets I think…
