Fashion Friday: Prepping for the Oscars

As always I’m pretty excited to watch the Oscar’s red carpet this weekend and I spent some time this morning scouting the recent fashion week shows for dresses I think may be great on the red carpet. Honestly, it was hard- I’m not loving a lot of the looks out there right now. And if I see one more celebrity in a see through skirt I will stab myself in the eye. I’m hoping for some more ladylike and straight up glamorous styles. What about you?

I don’t love the metallic belt or the headdress, but I do love the color and feminine silhouette of this Zuhair Murad number. This black Donna Karan dress is insanely sexy in a structured way.  With an updo and huge emerald and diamond statement earrings- kaboom.

I’d love this sweet dress bu Badgley Mischka on a young attendee- an Emma Stone type.

A simple yet elegant white Herrera and bohemian influences jewels from Naeem Khan (I can so see this on Leslie Mann for some reason).

Old school Hollywood glamour from Oscar.

Love the halter neck of this plum Herrera gown and the deep V and detailing on this Christian Siriano.

I think there will be a lot of red/pink/coral and cobalt blue/bold violet on the carpet. I am OBSESSED with the red Elie Saab dress (which is off the rack, actually, for a cool $12k)

I’d pair that bad boy with some coral and diamond statement earrings to compliment the belt and call it a day.

A couple more dresses from Bergdorfs that would be amazing- this blue and black Oscar that has a sculptural top or this other Oscar with a polka dot bustier, perfect for someone young!

It’s been a tough week, so sorry this isn’t more thorough or interesting- I’m hanging on by a thread this morning.  The only piece of fashion that seems to make sense around these parts right now is this tee shirt I made for me and Lindsey because we always joke that instead of going to the gym we just worry a lot as a method of weight management.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Gorgeous dresses! I really like your picks.

As a mother of a 21-month old, I’m amazed how often you’re able to post stories, plus handle a full-time job, plus take care of an entire human being. Hang in there. Sadly, some weeks it’s just this hard. You’re doing a great job. And don’t forget to ask for help – if you need a couple hours to nap this weekend, ask for it. It’s okay, you deserve it, and it will help get through those rough nights.

    1. Libby, your comment was so lovely. It felt like a hug.
Ditto what Libby said, Erin! Also, be kind to yourself. This parenthood shit is HHHHHAAAAARRRRRDDDD! xo

  2. First — Erin this post is great! Love your Fashion Fridays and Oscar posts. Second, if anyone wears one of those tired sheer skirts, you may also stab me in the eye. Also – I want that shirt.

  3. You COULD and SHOULD be a stylist to the stars. Your dress picks are ALWAYS sublime! I’ve lost my interest because , on the whole, the dresses are so fugly!

  4. Erin – love the coral dress (though, I personally look terrible in coral). Anxiety is your cardio? My anxiety seems to just add poundage to my frame. I am super anxious right now, so please enjoy some cookies for me. Hope that next week is easier for you and filled with a little sleep! Enjoy the red carpet.

  5. You are my fashion guru. I always find that your choices are classic but fresh. You always add just the right amount of accessories. I remember the time you showed what you were taking on your book tour and I was amazed at the gorgeous, classic, but special pieces, nothing boring, always put together perfectly. Hope this week will be a bit easier for you and little Henry.

  6. I love your red carpet fashion suggestion posts almost as much as I enjoy the post-event appropriately-snarky reviews of what people actually wore! These dresses are beautiful!

  7. Boycotting the Oscars due to the continued lack of diversity among nominees, but I look forward to seeing your picks afterward.

  8. Holy moly that black Oscar De La Renta gown is EVERYTHING! Actually, I’m really feeling all of the Oscar pieces that you chose. The black and blue is simple and elegant but interesting, and I always love a watteau train, even if I would prefer that dress without polka dots. Great choices, all around!

  9. That is new. Anxiety for your cardio. It sounds so cool. I need one of those. I think for a red carpet once in a lifetime is fine a see through dress. Especially when you have a body. I was thinking the same, do you ever sleep, eat, rest?

  10. Erin,

You are doing an incredible job. I am in awe of you.

It’s so easy to be hard on ourselves when we are in dire need of sleep. Don’t be afraid to ask for help – especially to get some sleep. People who care about us do want to help and sometimes all you have to do is ask. Asking does not make you a failure – it just means you are tired :)

As Libby said, some weeks are just hard.

You will get through the difficult weeks. Life will even out.

  11. Your picks were so much better than most every dress I saw on Oscar night! Although I did love the dresses of Priyanka Chopra, Cate Blanchett, and Naomi Watts, I thought there were a lot of high school prom looks and unflattering cuts. Your choices were special and Oscar worthy. You could definitely be a stylist!
